Windows 7 Upgrade, Part 1

By Paul - Posted on 15 February 2011

I had mentioned in one of my earlier blog entries that a Cubase 6 upgrade would first require a Windows 7 upgrade. Well, I'm having some memory issues during some recording sessions that will cause me to upgrade to Windows 7 regardless of what version of Cubase I am on.

Windows XP 32 bit will only address the first 3GB of memory, and lately I have been running out of memory while recording, which is pretty annoying.

I have finally come to the conclusion that it is time to upgrade my operating system. Note that the "upgrade" from Windows XP to Windows 7 is not really an upgrade, but a clean install, so I have been formulating a plan that will mitigate a lot of the risk of doing a clean install.

I currently plan to install an additional hard drive in my computer, and install Windows 7 on it; this will allow me to get Windows working correctly and I can always boot back to the XP drive if things are wonky.

After Windows is installed, and can then start the daunting task of installing all my recording software. Thanks to the iLok and the Steinberg key, most of the issues of moving software licensing will be non-existent. However I still have several software packages where I need to enter license keys manually; these are the packages I'm worried about.

Anyway, that's my plan for now. My first step is to procure a new hard drive and a version of Windows 7. That's it for now.

Have fun,
Paul
